Facebook hate group update
The group I mentioned a couple of posts ago is gone now. It has been for a couple of days. I sent two copies of my printout of the homepage in with my daughter last week, one for the assistant band director and the other for the principal. My daughter reported that nothing has been said as of yet, so I still plan to address the subject if there is any time left in the classes I'm subbing in this week and next. She told me that someone told the student about the group and he laughed. I seriously doubt that he found it funny for long. She said that another student told her there were 60 people in the group when it was shut down. That is frightening. This issue will not simply go away if it's ignored. It will happen again, especially if the administration does not take a proactive stance. The school takes a zero tolerance approach to bullying (not that it helped my son while he was there), but this policy has to extend outside of the school doors. Our next generation of citizens needs to be aware that although they are physically disconnected from the real world, they are toying with REAL emotions and REAL people. Plus, what you say to or about somebody else can hurt you. As soon as you post something nasty, it's your picture that goes up on the screen for everyone to see. My opinions of a bunch of kids that I see on a regular basis took a real nosedive that day, and I don't like that feeling at all. I want to see the best in everyone but it's hard to do when the word "hate" is associated with their names and faces. Perhaps that's the one thing I don't like about teaching...I'm going to see these kids again and I will have to push my conflicting emotions aside so I can do my job fairly and consistently. I'll have to remind myself that most of these kids were simply ignorant that the act of clicking a "join this group" button would have a real world impact.
